Why does WELS save water in your home and give you more money in the bank?

Question: Why does WELS save water in your home and give you more money in the bank?

Answer: When WELS (Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards) began in 2005, projections were made on the reduction in the demand for water and energy to the year 2021. Since then, a study completed in 2008 showed even greater savings than the 2005 projections. By 2021, Australians could save more than one billion dollars through reduced water and energy bills by simply choosing more efficient products.

Why is my water bill so high?

Question: Why is my water bill so high?

Answer: If your water bill has increased unexpectedly it could be an underground water leak such as a broken water line outside your house or it could be a leaking tap, toilet cistern or shower. At Ryan Old Plumbing we use drain inspection technology to investigate the problem, then, once identified, we can fix the issue.

Why is it important to keep gutters clear?

Question: Why is it important to keep gutters clear?

Answer: Gutters and down pipes play an important role in rerouting rain. If rain is not rerouted, it is likely that three problems will occur:

  • The rain water can gather in ‘pools’, which are not only a breeding ground for mosquitos but also lead to rust and, over time, holes in gutters
  • The rain water can flow into and behind various structures inside the house, such as into eaves and between walls. This can lead to wood rot and mould
  • The rain water can run directly into the foundation of the property which can lead to cracking and other damage

To avoid these issues it is important that gutters are kept clear and in good working order. Even if they do not appear to be causing problems, an inspection by a professional can put your mind at ease and may even prevent costly repairs down the track.

How can I determine if my toilet is leaking water?

Question: How can I determine if my toilet is leaking water?

Answer: One way to determine whether or not your toilet is leaking is to put a few drops of food colouring into the cistern (the top part of the toilet, sometimes called a tank). If your toilet is leaking, over the next 30 minutes or so, coloured water will appear in the toilet. Make sure no one flushes the toilet while you are trying this test!
