What is a thermostatic mixing valve?
A thermostatic mixing valve, which is also known as a TMV, is a tool that combines hot and cold water together to maintain a specific water temperature when sending water through a faucet.
What does a TMV do?
A TMV mixes both hot and cold water together so it is a particular temperature, within 1℃ +/-, so it can be sent to different water outlets. The temperature is generally prearranged by a tradesperson or a qualified local plumber, and the TMV element that responds to thermal activity alters the levels of hot and/or cold water to ensure the correct temperature of the liquid.
According to National Plumbing and Drainage Standard AS/NZS 3500.4: 2003, some hot water installations are not permitted to deliver water at a temperature higher than 50℃/45℃, which is why a TMV is installed – to assist with temperature regulation.
Who should have a TMV installed?
The following locations should all have a TMV installed:
- Aged care facilities and nursing homes.
- Hospitals.
- Childcare facilities and after school care.
- Respite centres.
- Shopping centre bathroom facilities.
- Hotels.
Generally, any environment that contains high-risk individuals, including children, the sick and the elderly, require a TMV as they require lower water delivery temperatures – usually 45℃ or 113℉ at its hottest.
Can I install a thermostatic mixing valve myself?
No, installing a TMV is not a DIY project and can be dangerous if done incorrectly. Only an appropriately qualified plumber with a TMV licence is allowed to install the device – and the Ryan Old Plumbing team are exactly that. Call today!
